Staycations Are Where It's At

I don't need to tell you how expensive life is right now.  Summer vacation is here and its time for family summer vacations! My family never took summer vacations.  We never took vacations.  Summer vacations consisted of a trip to Cedar Point once a summer.  And I loved it!  I had no idea that other families went places like Florida or Italy or visiting cousins in California.  That was not a thought in my family or friend group.  When I started dating my boyfriend, he takes vacations very seriously.  Especially summer vacation.  He's a school teacher so he has a legitimate summer break, fall break, winter break and spring break.  And in his family, you travel at spring break and summer break.  I love it!  I'm a travel girl.  I was taking a train to Chicago to shop as an 18 year old.  Give me an adventure!  The reality is that most people do not travel like that.  Whether you're entertaining kids, hosting visiting family, or just looking for your new husband,  Fort Wayne is packed with summer fun.

Visit the Zoo

A Fort Wayne summer isn't complete without a trip to Fort Wayne Zoo. Consistently ranked among the best zoos in the country, it's home to giraffe feedings, penguins, tigers, and plenty of opportunities to make memories.

Explore the Riverfront

Spend an afternoon at Promenade Park where you can walk along the river, rent kayaks, enjoy splash areas, attend concerts, and take part in special summer events.

Catch a TinCaps Game

Nothing says summer like baseball. Grab a hot dog, enjoy the atmosphere, and cheer on the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Parkview Field. It's one of the city's favorite summer traditions.

Spark Curiosity at Science Central

Rainy day? Head to Science Central for hands-on exhibits, live demonstrations, a planetarium, and hundreds of interactive science activities for kids and adults.

Enjoy Summer Festivals

Fort Wayne's summer calendar is packed with festivals yet to come, including:

  • GreekFest
  • Pride Fest
  • Allen County Fair
  • Taste of the Arts

Visit the Art Museum

Spend a few cool hours exploring Fort Wayne Museum of Art and the growing Arts Campus downtown. It's a great option when the summer heat gets intense.  Often they have fashion exhibits and those are my favorite time to go.

Farmers Markets

Fresh produce, baked goods, flowers, local honey, and handmade crafts make summer farmers markets a favorite family outing. Salomon Farm's market is one local favorite.

Family Game Nights and Indoor Fun

Try something different with:

  • Crazy Pinz Entertainment Center for bowling, mini golf, laser tag, arcade games, and ropes courses.
  • Fort Wayne Game Show Experience for a unique family challenge night.

Take a Downtown Adventure

Walk the murals, discover public art like 77 Steps, grab ice cream, enjoy outdoor dining.

Make a Summer Bucket List

Before summer ends, try to:

  • Watch a sunset at Promenade Park
  • Feed a giraffe at the zoo
  • Attend a festival
  • Catch a baseball game
  • Visit a farmers market
  • Take a kayak trip
  • Try a new local restaurant
  • Explore a museum
  • Enjoy an outdoor concert
  • Take a one-tank road trip

The Best Part of Summer?

It's yours and you can do whatever you want to.  Some of my favorite nights were spent on our balcony listening to music way too late, sweating and complaining about the heat and mosquitos.  I loved those nights.  They're the soundtrack to our relationship.
