Go Jump In A Lake, But In A Nice Way.

Summer in Indiana means one thing: lake season.  Whether you're spending weekends at the lake, visiting friends on the water, renting a boat, or simply enjoying a sunset from the shore, there's something special about lake life. It's relaxing, beautiful, and a chance to slow down for a while.  But as more people head to the water each year, I've noticed something that deserves a little attention: lake etiquette.

No one expects perfection, but a little courtesy can help everyone enjoy their time on the water.

Respect the Quiet

One of the best things about a lake is the peaceful atmosphere. While music and fun are certainly part of the experience, remember that not everyone wants to hear your playlist from three piers away.

Watch Your Wake

If you're operating a boat, pay attention to your wake near docks, swimmers, fishermen, kayakers, and paddleboarders. What feels like a small wave to you can cause damage to docks, toss someone around in a smaller watercraft, or create safety concerns.

Do Not Be A Trash Person

This one should go without saying, but unfortunately it still needs to be said.  Take your trash with you. Empty beverage cans, food wrappers, fishing line, and plastic bottles don't belong in our lakes. The water belongs to all of us, and future generations deserve to enjoy it just as much as we do.

Be Kind at the Boat Ramp

The boat launch is not the place to learn how to back up a trailer for the first time.  If you're new to boating, practice beforehand if possible. Have your gear ready before you get to the ramp, and be patient with others who may be learning.

Safety Never Goes Out of Style

Life jackets may not be glamorous, but neither are emergencies.  Whether you're on a boat, kayak, paddleboard, or jet ski, prioritize safety. Keep an eye on children, stay aware of changing weather conditions, and never assume accidents only happen to other people.

Remember Why We're Here, most people come to the lake for the same reason: to relax, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy the beauty of summer.

A little patience, a little kindness, and a little consideration can make everyone's day better.  So this summer, wave to your neighbors, pick up an extra piece of trash if you see it, and remember that good lake etiquette isn't about rules.  It's about respect. And honestly, the world could use a little more of that everywhere.
