So We're Just Out Here Talking About Menopause Now?! Yes! Finally!

Menopause and perimenopause can bring changes that catch many women by surprise. While these symptoms are common, they can feel alarming if you don't realize they're connected to shifting hormones. For me it started in my early 40's and I literally thought I was losing my mind.  These are some of the best tips I've found on how to navigate it.

1. Extreme Hunger Many women notice they feel hungrier than usual during perimenopause. Hormonal changes can affect appetite, cravings, and how the body regulates blood sugar.

2. Mood Swings One minute you may feel calm, and the next irritated, anxious, or emotional. Fluctuating hormone levels can make moods feel unpredictable.

3. Hot Flashes A sudden wave of heat that spreads through your body is one of the most recognized menopause symptoms. Hot flashes can happen during the day or night and vary from mild to intense. I was and still am changing my clothes in the middle of the night because I'm sweating so much.

4. Increased Cravings You may find yourself craving snacks or feeling hungry more often than before. Many women report changes in appetite during this stage of life.

5. Unexpected Emotional Moments Commercials, movies, memories, or everyday situations can suddenly bring tears. Hormonal shifts can make emotions feel closer to the surface. And for whatever reason, I started to swear a ton more than I ever did.

6. Changes in Interests and Tolerance Some women find they become less interested in things they once enjoyed or have less patience for noise, stress, or certain forms of entertainment.

7. Tingling or Electric-Shock Sensations Though less commonly discussed, some women experience brief tingling sensations or feelings that resemble small electric shocks during menopause.

8. Feeling Like Your Body Has Changed Overnight Hot one minute, cold the next. Rested one day, exhausted the next. Menopause can make it feel like your body is suddenly playing by new rules.

9. Anxiety and Worry Many women report increased anxiety, insomnia, and worries about aging, health, family, and the future during menopause.

The Bottom Line If you're experiencing these symptoms, you're not alone. Menopause affects every woman differently, but understanding what's happening can make the journey less scary. If symptoms are interfering with your daily life, talk with your healthcare provider about treatment options and lifestyle changes that may help. I did and I was so glad I did!
