What's Your Favorite Fair Food?

Let's be honest.

We all say we're going to the Indiana State Fair for the animals, the exhibits, the concerts, and the people-watching.  But we know the truth.  We're going for the food.  Every summer, hoosiers across Indiana gather for one of our favorite traditions: eating things we would never dream of ordering anywhere else.  And somehow, that's part of the magic.

Fair Food Doesn't Follow the Rules

The Indiana State Fair is one of the few places where it's completely acceptable to eat a giant pork tenderloin sandwich for lunch, fried cheese curds for a snack, and a towering ice cream treat before dinner.  Calories don't count at the fair. It's practically state law.

The Classics Never Go Out of Style

Sure, every year brings a new outrageous food creation, but there are some fair favorites that deserve Hall of Fame status.  Corn dogs.  Lemon shake-ups.  Fresh-cut fries.  Roasted corn on the cob dripping with butter.  Funnel cakes covered in powdered sugar.  And of course, Indiana's beloved pork tenderloin.  These classics are comfort food wrapped in nostalgia. One bite can transport you right back to childhood.

The Weird Foods Are Half the Fun

Every year vendors try to outdo each other with bigger, crazier, and more creative creations.  Pickle-flavored everything. Deep-fried desserts. Foods stuffed inside other foods. Things covered in sauces that probably shouldn't exist but somehow taste amazing.

Share the Experience

One of my favorite fair food strategies is sharing.  Instead of committing to one giant meal, grab a few friends and sample everything.  One person gets the elephant ear.  Another gets the lemon shake-up.  Someone else orders the new featured fair food. Everybody gets a bite.  It's basically a buffet with more walking.

Don't Forget the Dairy Barn

If you've ever been to the Indiana State Fair, you know. The dairy treats are practically mandatory. Whether it's milkshakes, ice cream, or an ice-cold glass of milk, there's something special about enjoying Indiana dairy products while wandering the fairgrounds on a hot summer day.

It's More Than Just Food

The truth is, the food isn't really the whole story.  It's the memories attached to it.  It's parents carrying sleepy kids after a long day. It's teenagers laughing on the midway.  It's grandparents sharing traditions with grandkids.  It's seeing neighbors, friends, and familiar faces from all over Indiana.  The food brings us together, but the memories keep us coming back.  So if you're heading to the Indiana State Fair this year, come hungry.  Try something new.  Enjoy an old favorite. And remember that some of the best summer memories are made one delicious bite at a time!
